Prerequisites: MATH 220, 230 (or 231), and 3 credits in Computer Science.

Textbook: Numerical Mathematics and Computing (5th ed.) by Cheney and Kincaid.

Optional Software:  MATLAB (latest version is 7 release 14)  You may purchase the student version from the book store (about 100 dollars).  However, all university computers have MATLAB (version 6.5 release 13) installed so you do not need to purchase it. 


Homework: There will be 6 to 8  homework assignments worth 20 points each. There is a 25 percent score loss if an assignment is submitted after the due date but by the end of the next class period.  No assignments will be accepted after that. Assignments and due dates are posted (and possibly updated) in the calendar on the course website.  

Exams:  There will be 2 in-class exams worth 50 points each and a final worth 100 points. Test dates are posted (and possibly updated) in the calendar on the course website.

Labs: Occasionally at the beginning of the semester, we will meet in a computer lab reserved for our use (probably Hammermill 137).  I will give at least a day notice as to when and where we will meet. If you come to the class room and nobody is there. We are probably at the lab.   

Grading: Your grade will based on your percentage of total points earned:

A       93-100 %
A-     90-93 %
B+     87-90 %
B       83-87 %
B-     80-83 %
C+     77-80 %
C       70-77 %
D       60-70 %
F          0-60%

If your percentage falls exactly on one of the boundary values you will be given the better of the two grades. No rounding.

Make-up Exams: A Make-up exam will only be given with a documented University-approved excuse.
